Sudoku - Across The Row Using A Mini-Grid
from:Kathleen Frassrand
Sudoku puzzles are just plain fun. They spark the mind and get you thinking; they advance your logic skills; and sometimes they frustrate you. As you begin solving sudokus, you will come up with your own strategies, but it is always nice to have a few tried and true techniques to fall back on.
One of the easiest techniques for solving sudokus involves scanning the row and comparing against the mini-grid. Each row spans three mini-grids. Look for a row that is missing a few numbers, but not all in one mini-grid. You want your missing numbers spread out across the row. By looking at each mini-grid, you should be able to eliminate a few options. So, out of the four numbers that your row may be missing, you can safely deduce that only two of those numbers could possible go in your first empty spot (because the other two numbers are already in the mini-grid).
Of course, don’t forget to also scan all the way down the column to be sure a number isn’t repeated there.
Do this for each empty spot in the row and you’ll quickly see that instead of four options in each square, you end up with one or two. Many times, this will allow you to quickly solve the entire row.
By the way, it works for columns too.
Enjoy your game!
