Solving Sudoku - The Squeezing and Cross-Hatching Method
from:Kathleen Frassrand
Solving sudoku puzzles should be fun! Ok, maybe a little frustrating - but fun none-the-less. Today, I'm going to explain the basics of the squeezing method.
This technique is a fairly simple one to employ, and should be one of the first things you try when starting a new sudoku.
Squeezing involves looking across three mini-grids to place a missing number. You'll want to look for a row or column of mini-grids that have a specific number placed twice. You can then use the placement of these numbers to locate the third.
Lets take the top three mini-grids of a puzzle. If the first mini-grid has a 3 placed in the top row and the last mini-grid has a 3 placed in the bottom row, then you know that the center mini-grid must have the 3 placed in the middle row.
Now, hopefully you got lucky and there is only one spot open on the middle row of the center mini-grid, but if not then you use the cross-hatching technique to eliminate the available spots.
Cross-hatching involves looking down the row or column to see if the number occurs. So, if we are currently looking at the center row of the middle mini-grid and there are two spots available, then we look down the column of those two spots to see if the number 3 occurs in either one. If it does show up, then you can eliminate that column and should have your answer.
Squeezing and Cross-Hatching are quick and easy methods to start plugging in numbers in a new sudoku puzzle. They won't work all the time, and you'll find them most often in easy to medium sudoku puzzles.
By the way, once you solve a number in a sudoku puzzle remember that it may open up the possibility to use the squeezing technique in another column or row of mini-grids. Always come back to this technique multiple times while trying to solve a puzzle.
Good Luck, And have some fun!
