Rules to remember for Sudoku
from: Kathleen FrassrandSchool place emphasis on all of the standard subject: math, science, chemistry, english. But how about logic? Is there a course in school that teaches a child how to figure out the path from point A to point B? Logically?
Believe it or not, there is a game that teaches people to think logically. It is a deceptively simple game at first glance, but will foil even the most brilliant mind. And what is this game you might ask? Easy. Sudoku.
Sudoku is a puzzle with 9 columns and 9 rows. These are split into mini-grids, each bearing 9 squares. Some squares will be pre-filled with numbers, most will be empty. The object of the puzzle is to fill each mini-grid with the number 1 through 9, without repeating a number in any row, column, or mini-grid.
When people first look at a Sudoku game, they mistakenly think that slapping some numbers into the available squares is all that is required. Then they pick up the pencil. They quickly realize that this game requires logical thinking. And in the case of an expert sudoku, it requires logical thinking with the ability to look ahead two to three moves.
Learning to solve sudokus may take some time, but the solver will be rewarded with an amazing amount of satisfaction. Each sudoku they solve will take them one step further in building a foundation to solve even expert puzzles.
Sudoku puzzles are now available in almost every major newspaper, many magazines, puzzle books, and even online. Some people will enjoy the feeling of a pencil and paper in their hands, while others will turn to the online games that give them instant gratification (and sometimes hints!).
One of the best pieces of advice for a new sudoku player is to put the puzzle down when you feel frustrated. Go out for a walk, or watch TV,just put down the puzzle and come back later with a fresh perspective. You'll be amazed at how much you missed before. Happy Solving!
