How to play sudoku
from: Kathleen FrassrandWay back when no one knew its name, it was Number Place. Then one day, it got a fancy Japanese name and it took the world by storm. Everybody loves Sudoku.
No one knows for sure where the sudoku puzzle came from. Some maintain it came from Japan (the name sudoku means "placement puzzles"). Others state that the puzzles were created by a man named Howard Garnes in the 1970's.
Whatever the origin, sudoku is an addicting game. It is number game that uses logic skills - not math skills. A standard sudoku puzzle is composed of a 9 x 9 grid that has 9 columns, 9 rows. These columns and rows are broken down into mini-grids, which each have 9 squared inside. The object is to place all of the numbers, 1 through 9 into each mini-grid so that no numbers repeat in any column or row. At first glance is seems simple, but sudoku addicts know that looks can be deceiving.
Every sudoku puzzle will start with some pre-filled squares. The more difficult the puzzle, the fewer squares will be filled in.
Well-made sudoku puzzles will have only one unique solution, and should always be solved using logic alone. Guessing has no place in a sudoku puzzle. In some hard or expert sudokus, the logic will require the player to think ahead two or three moves, but never guess.
A sudoku player can start anywhere in the puzzle, although the best method seems to be a quick scan of the puzzle for sequences that are almost completely filled in. If only two 3's are needed in the entire puzzle, the player can almost certainly narrow down the choices as to where these last 3's go.
There are many techniques and strategies to solve a sudoku puzzle, but the best teacher is always experience. Start with easy sudokus and work your way up. Each sudoku you complete has strengthened your foundation and given you invaluable knowledge for solving harder games.
Many people like the online versions of sudoku that appear regularly on the net now. They offer an immediate check of your answers and many have pretty graphics and animations. Others will always choose to print their sudoku puzzles and work with pencil and paper. There is a certain realness to it that online games lack. That, and you can take a pencil and paper anywhere, you aren't tied to your computer.
Whatever method you choose, the bottom line is ENJOY! Sudokus can be frustrating, but they can also be rewarding. Happy Solving!
